Although measuring microalbuminuria on a 24 hour specimen is preferred, testing a spot urine specimen can also be performed.
Testing is performed on a spot urine with measurement of both creatinine and albumin.
urinary albumin excretion in µg per mg creatinine =
= (urine albumin per µg/dL) / (urine creatinine in mg/dL)
Interpretation:
• Microalbuminuria is defined as urinary albumin excretion rate of 30 – 299 µg albumin per mg creatinine in 2 of 3 samples collected over a 6 month period.
