Description

Febrile, nonhemolytic reactions may occur following transfusion of a platelet product. These are usually related to the concentration of cytokines in the plasma. These reactions can be reduced by several interventions.

Methods to reduce the risk of febrile, nonhemolytic reactions:

(1) leukoreduction, preferably at the time of product collection

(2) transfusion as soon as possible after collection (preferably within 3 days)

(3) removal of excess plasma prior to transfusion

(4) pretreatment of the patient with an antipyretic agent (acetaminophen, etc)
