Description

Sheen et al developed a simple method for distinguishing a ureterouterine (UU) or uretosalpingeal (US) fistula from a vesicouterine (VU) one. This would be useful in an outpatient or resource poor facility. The authors are from Chiayi Christian Hospital in Taiwan.

Patient selection: woman with urine being passed vaginally

Protocol:

(1) The woman empties her bladder.

(2) A catheter is placed into the bladder.

(3) A nontoxic dye such as methylene blue is instilled into the bladder via the catheter.

(4) The color of the urine in the vagina is observed.

Limitation:

• This method cannot distinguish the presence of both UU/US and VU fistula from VU fistula alone. The presence of both together should be extremely rare.
