Sciulli and Pfau developed equations for estimating body weight for a child based on the midshaft diameter of the femur. The authors are from the Ohio State University in Columbus.
Patient selection: <= 20 years of age
Measurement of femoral shaft diameter was based on the maximum midshaft diameter measured on an X-ray.
Parameters:
(1) midshaft transverse diameter of the femur in mm
(2) gender
(3) race (White or Black only)
(4) age in years
If the age is not known:
weight in pounds =
= (factor A) * ((femoral diameter in mm)^(factor B))
