Description

For adults aged 20-80 with stable renal function, then the creatinine clearance can be estimated from the gender, serum creatinine and age in years.

estimated creatinine clearance for males =

= ((98 - (16/20 * (age - 20))) / (serum creatinine in mg/dL)) mL/min per 1.73 meters-squared =

= ((98 - (0.8 * (age - 20))) / (serum creatinine in mg/dL)) mL/min per 1.73 meters-squared

estimated creatinine clearance for females =

= 90% of that predicted for males =

= (0.9 * (98 - (0.8 * (age - 20))) / (serum creatinine in mg/dL)) mL/min per 1.73 meters-squared

where:

• The age is taken to nearest decade.

• It is uses the assumption that the average body surface area for 70 kg male is 1.73 meters-squared.

Limitations:

• The equation cannot be used if muscle mass is significantly different from the average (for example, as in cachexia or in the excessively muscular)
