Description

Sarcopenia has a negative impact on many conditions. Montano-Loza et al modified the MELD score to incorporate the impact of sarcopenia. The authors are from the University of Alberta Hospital, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Cross Cancer Institute (Edmonton), and the University of Calgary.

Patient selection: cirrhosis

Parameters:

(1) MELD score

(2) presence or absence of sarcopenia based on the L3 skeletal muscle index (L3 SMI)

L3 SMI is determined at the level of the third lumbar vertebra and reports cross sectional area of skeletal muscle in square centimeters normalized to the body surface area.

Gender

BMI

Sarcopenia if L3 SMI

female

>= 25 kg per square m

<= 41 cm^2/m^2

male

>= 25 kg per square m

<= 53 cm^2/m^2

female

< 25 kg per square m

<= 43 cm^2/m^2

male

< 25 kg per square m

<= 43 cm^2/m^2

MELD-sarcopenia =

= (MELD score) + (10.35 if sarcopenia present)
