Risk Factors for Electromagnetic Interference with Medical Device

Purpose: To identify risk factors for interference with a medical device caused by an electromagnetic (EM) source.

Description

An electromagnetic source (microwave oven, cellular phone, etc.) may interfere with certain medical devices. The interference may be significant if the device controls a critical function.


 

Risk factors for occurrence:

(1) overlap in electromagnetic spectrum

(2) lack of shielding in the medical device

(3) strength of the interfering source

(4) proximity to the medical device (some only exert an effect at a very close range)

 

The outcome of the interference depends on how critical the medical device is for a patient.
