Description

Winters et al developed the medial tibial stress score (MTSS) to measure the severity of the condition. It can be used to monitor the outcome of an intervention. The authors are from University Centre Utrecht.

Patient selection: medial tibial stress (exercise-induced pain along the posteromedial tibia, with pain provoked by palpation over distance >= 5 cm)

If both medial shins are affected, then the worse one is scored.

Parameters:

(1) ability to engage in sport related to pain in shin

(2) pain in shin during sport activity

(3) pain in shin while walking

(4) pain in shin at rest (laying down, sitting)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 10

• The higher the score initially the more severe the medial tibial stress.

• With effective therapy the score should drop to 0.
