Description

The medial plica is redundant synovium along the medial aspect of the knee. Irritation and inflammation can cause it to become painful.


 

Clinical features:

(1) The patient experiences the acute onset of anteromedial knee pain.

(2) The onset is preceded by repetitive overuse or a sudden increase in activity.

(3) Pain may be associated with prolonged sitting, knee flexion or standing up.

(4) There is a tender mobile nodule or area of thickened soft tissue just anterior to the joint line.

(5) No effusion is present.

(6) The knee exam is otherwise normal.

 

Complications:

(1) Tear in portion passing over the medial femoral condyle.
