Description

A person using a ladder improperly is at risk for a number of injuries. These can be prevented by careful attention to safety practices.

General recommendations:

(1) Select a ladder that is in good working order with intact rungs.

(2) The ladder should be used with caution outdoors when the weather is inclement (wind, rain, lightning or snow).

(3) Keep the area clear around the top and bottom of the ladder.

(4) Children should not play on or around a ladder.

(5) Do not stand on the top two rungs of a ladder.

(6) Make sure that the base of the ladder is secure on level and solid ground before climbing. The ladder should not wobble to either side.

(7) Do not reach too far to either side. It is better to reposition the ladder.

(8) Someone should be at the bottom of the ladder to stabilize it and to pass materials.

(9) Do not let someone pass directly underneath the ladder if heavy items are being used (it is called bad luck for a good reason).

(10) Do not exceed the weight load limit for the ladder.

(11) Select a wooden or nonconducting ladder if using electric tools.

(12) Be careful placing a ladder around electric lines.

(13) Do not carry large or awkward objects while climbing the ladder.

Straight ladders:

(1) The upper portion should be placed against a stable surface.

(2) When climbing onto the roof the top of the ladder should extend at least 3 feet beyond the edge of the roof.

(3) The base of the ladder should be placed 1 foot from the wall for each 4 feet in rise (foot at 76° to the horizontal).

Step ladders:

(1) A step ladder should be locked open securely before climbing.

(2) Do not step on or place weight on the paint can ledge.
