Description

Zhu et al reported a number of equations for using age to predict symptom-limited exercise maximum heart rate. These are based on data from the CARDIA (Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults) study. the authors are from multiple universities in the United States and Norway.

Patient selection: adults from 18 to 50 years of age

estimated maximum heart rate =

= 179 + (0.29 * (age in years)) - (0.011 * ((age)^2))

simplified equation for 18 to 37 years of age =

= 189 - (0.35 * (age))

simplified equation for 25 to 50 years of age =

= 199 - (0.63 * (age))

for an adult with a BMI >= 26.4 kg per square meter (fourth quartile) =

= 179 + (0.18 * (age)) - (0.012 * ((age)^2))
