Description

A mother who develops hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets (HELLP) or acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) during pregnancy may have a fetus with an inherited metabolic disorder.

The fetus of a mother with AFLP or HELLP should be screened for an inherited metabolic disorder.

 

If the fetus is found to be homozygous for a genetic defect, then the mother will be a heterozygous carrier.
