Description

Jansen et al developed a score for evaluating a patient with Crohn's disease for inflammation-driven malnutrition. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from nutritional support. The authors are from Charite Universitatsmedizin (Berlin), University of Applied Sciences (Neubrandenburg) and Krankenhaus Waldfriede (Berlin) in Germany.

Patient selection: Crohn's disease

Parameters:

(1) body mass index (BMI) in kg per square meter

(2) weight loss in percent over 3 months

(3) C-reactive protein (CRP) in mg/L

Parameter

Finding

Points

BMI

> 20 kg per square m

0

18.5 to 20 kg per sq m

1

< 18.5 kg per square m

2

percent weight loss

< 5%

0

5 to 9.9%

2

>= 10%

3

CRP

< 5 mg/L

0

5 to 50 mg/L

2

> 50 mg/dL

3

total score =

= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 8

• The higher the score the greater the risk for inflammation-driven malnutrition and the risk for Crohn's disease related complications.
