Psychiatric or emotional reasons:

(1) pyromania

(2) vandalism

(3) revenge or hatred (hate crime, etc.)

 

Committed by non-owner for economic reasons:

(1) extortion or coercion

 

Committed by owner for economic reasons:

(1) insurance fraud

(2) tax fraud

(3) stop loss

(4) parcel creation

(5) property improvement

 

Criminal reason:

(1) crime concealment

(2) commit or conceal suicide or homicide

 

Set by authorities:

(1) controlled fire training

(2) wild fire control

 

where:

• Wild fire control was added to the original list.

• Sometimes a historic building will "accidentally" burn down because of the local restrictions on tearing it down.

• Revenge may include a fire set by a disgruntled employee or ex-boyfriend.
