Description

Rasburicase (recombinant uric acid oxidase) degrades uric acid in a patient with hyperuricemia. It continues to digest uric acid in a blood sample after it has been collected unless it can be inactivated.

The enzyme causes oxidation of the uric acid to allantoin.

Failure to inactive rasburicase may give low concentrations of uric acid due to continued degradation.

The enzyme can be inactivated by one of the following:

(1) placing the blood sample in an ice solution (4°C)

(2) adding 8% perchloric acid (PCA) to the blood sample
