The magnitude and intensity scales for a volcanic eruption are logarithmic measures for the size of an eruption. They can be used on both ancient and recent eruptions.
magnitude =
= LOG10(erupted mass in kilograms) – 7
intensity =
= LOG10(mass eruption rate in kg/s) + 3
Interpretation:
• A large eruption will have a magnitude of 6.0 or greater.
• A very vigorous eruption will have an intensity of 10.0 or greater.
