Parimon et al developed a score evaluating lung function of a patient prior to a hematopoietic stem cell transplant. The authors are from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle.
Parameters:
(1) FEV1 as percent of predicted
(2) DLco as percent of predicted
Parameter
Finding
Points
FEV1
> 80% of predicted
1
70 to 80%
2
60 to 70%
3
< 60%
4
DLco
> 80% of predicted
1
70 to 80%
2
60 to 70%
3
< 60%
4
pretransplant lung function score = pretransplant LFS =
= (points for FEV1) + (points for DLco)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 2
• maximum score: 8
• The higher the score the worse the lung function. A high score is associated with respiratory failure and mortality following HSCT.

I
normal
3 or 4
II
mild decrease
5 or 6
III
moderate decrease
7 or 8
