Description

Raynaud’s phenomenon may affect the tongue.


 

Features of lingual Raynaud’s phenomenon:

(1) bluish or purplish discoloration of tongue following triggering event

(2) normal appearance between episodes

(3) other color change (whitish, dark red) are possible

 

Risk factors:

(1) radiation to the head and neck

(2) autoimmune disease (SLE, Sjogren’s, scleroderma)

 

Triggers for a vasospastic episode:

(1) drinking a cold beverage

(2) emotional stress

(3) exposure of tongue to cold weather
