Description

Some patients with dysfunctional tear syndrome (DTS) will have involvement of the eyelids.


 

Findings in a patient with lid margin involvement:

(1) telangiectasia

(2) hyperemia

(3) crusting and scaling

(4) loss of eyelashes

(5) abnormal eyelashes

(6) inspissation

(7) Meibomian gland dysfunction

(8) abnormal lid function

 

Involvement of the lid margin may be:

(1) anterior

(2) posterior

(3) both

 

Management of anterior margin involvement:

(1) lid hygiene

(2) application of topical antibiotic

 

Management of posterior margin involvement:

(1) local application of heat with massage

(2) topical steroids (in more severe cases)

(3) oral tetracycline therapy (in more severe cases)
