Description

Drug that is injected into subcutaneous tissue or intramuscularly may leak out afterwards. This may or may not be significant.

Risk factors for leakage:

(1) intramuscular injection (increased tissue pressures)

(2) scarring at the injection site

(3) injection technique

Significance of the leakage depends on:

(1) mechanism: local scar tissue could be associated with impaired absorption

(2) volume of injection fluid that seeps out

(3) therapeutic range for the drug

Differential diagnosis:

(1) leakage of interstitial fluid
