Description

Sarcoidosis can involve the larynx, resulting in a number of signs and symptoms.

Signs and symptoms may include:

(1) hoarseness (dysphonia)

(2) inspiratory dyspnea or stridor which can progress to airway compromise

(3) nonspecific laryngeal complaints

(4) dysphagia

The laryngeal exam may show mucosal edema. The supraglottis is the site most commonly involved and the glottis the least.

Diagnostic features:

(1) The presence of sarcoidosis elsewhere (unless laryngeal involvement is the first manifestation).

(2) Noncaseating granulomas on biopsy, with negative stains for micro-organisms.

(3) Exclusion of other diagnoses.
