Description

Lactose is used as a filler in some medications. A person who is lactose intolerant may be unable to take a drug formulated with lactose.


Features of lactose-related medication intolerance:

(1) The patient has severe lactose intolerance.

(2) The patient is taking a medication that contains lactose as a filler.

(3) The patient is unable to take the drug because of intolerable side effects.

(4) The side effects are those of lactose intolerance.

(5) The patient is able to take the drug with adverse effects if a formulation without lactose is taken or if supplemental lactase is taken with the medication.
