Description

A diabetic patient with iron deficiency may develop problems in glucose control.

Patient selection: diabetic patient who is iron deficient

Manifestations of poor glucose control in a patient who is iron deficient:

(1) increase in hemoglobin A1c levels despite optimum management

(2) increase in insulin needs and/or poorly controlled glucose

If these are due to iron deficiency, then they should improve when the patient is iron replete.

The changes may be most noticeable in a previously well-controlled diabetic who becomes iron deficient.
