Certain types of proton beam therapies can interfere with a cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED). It is important to consider the CIED when planning radiation therapy.
There is a risk of interference if the proton beam is high energy or strong enough to generate neutrons.
Types of interference:
(1) data loss
(2) parameter reset
(3) unrecoverable reset
(4) signal interference
(5) change in pacing threshold
(6) premature battery depletion
The risk is increased if:
(1) the CIED is in or near the proton beam field
(2) the patient is pacing dependent
