Description

Some patients take medications at home that can be toxic after repeated handling over time. The compound may be inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin by accident. This risk can be reduced by carefully handling of the drug.

Precautions:

(1) Wear disposable gloves when handling the drug container or the drug itself.

(2) Wash the hands before and after handling the container and the drug.

(3) Look for loose powder or liquid that may become aerosolized and remove carefully.

(4) Clean up any spilled drug with a moist, disposable towel while wearing gloves. The towel should be discarded in a plastic bag or other closed container that is not accessible to children or animals.

(5) Keep the container and medication out of reach to children or pets.

(6) Store the medication separately from other drugs in order to minimize the chances of accidental exposure.

(7) Do not transfer the medication to another container unless it is properly labeled and it can be securely sealed.

(8) Keep an accurate record of medication use over time so that all of the medication can be accounted for.

(9) Store the medication as instructed to maintain stability.

(10) Dispose of the medication after it outdates or if it is no longer needed.

(11) Administer the medication only as instructed.

(12) Be familiar with signs and symptoms of acute and chronic toxicity.
