Description

The silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) is a carp introduced into the United States from Asia. It can jump several feet into the air.


 

The silver carp may grow to 60 pounds (27.3 kilograms).

 

The fish are more likely to jump:

(1) when the water is warm during the summer

(2) if the fish are agitated by a motor boat

(3) if there are large numbers of them present

 

A boater may suffer serious injury if he or she:

(1) is struck in the head

(2) is struck while traveling at high speed in the opposite direction

(3) is startled and has underlying cardiovascular disease

(4) is knocked overboard

(5) loses control of the boat

(6) has a cut from a fin that becomes infected

 

Water skiers and people on piers may be at risk.
