Description

Nathanson and Reinert listed common injuries associated with windsurfing. The authors are from Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.


 

Sites most commonly injured:

(1) knee

(2) ankle

(3) foot

(4) chest wall

 

Common types of injuries:

(1) sprains

(2) lacerations

(3) contusions

(4) fractures

 

Most injuries were caused by impact with either the surfing board or the ocean floor.

 

Maneuvers associated with injury:

(1) catapult fall (being catapulted from the board)

(2) high-speed fall

(3) jumping, especially with a somersault

 

Additional factors to consider (not mentioned in the article):

(1) crowded conditions

(2) intoxication

(3) high wind conditions

(4) trees or other debris

(5) inexperience

(6) problems with the equipment
