Description

Shopping carts may be associated with a number of injuries. Some may be severe enough to require hospital admission, especially in children under 5 years of age.


 

Types of injuries that may occur:

(1) falls out of a cart by small children

(2) tipping over of a cart

(3) crush injuries to torso

(4) crush injuries to toes and feet

(5) crush and pinch injuries to fingers

(6) back pain associated with heavy lifting

(7) entrapment of head or extremity

 

Risk factors for injury:

(1) unrestrained small children

(2) young children playing

(3) tomfoolery with carts, typically be adolescents

(4) inattention or distraction

(5) hurried

(6) intoxication

(7) overloading

(8) heavy, awkward items imparting a high center of gravity to the cart

(9) items projecting outward

(10) sloped surface, usually outside

(11) slippery or unstable surface (for example, outside during winter)

(12) crowded conditions

 

Just as when driving, a shopper should be alert to risk behaviors shown by other shoppers.
