Description

Throwing darts is a popular bar or tavern game. Injury may occur if the dart strikes someone rather than the target.


 

Sites of injury:

(1) eye (cornea, lens, globe)

(2) skin of face, scalp, chest, back, hand, arm. leg, foot, other

 

Risk factors:

(1) intoxication

(2) horseplay

(3) trick throws

(4) location of target close to a doorway or crowd

(5) unsupervised children (or college students)

(6) leaving a dart on a ledge or chair with an exposed point

(7) throwing the dart while someone is at the target

(8) walking into a dart

(9) pointing or gesturing with a dart in hand

(10 dart bouncing off the wall or target

 

Complications:

(1) infection

(2) tetanus

(3) blindness or significant visual impairment
