Alkaline batteries are effective sources of energy but they can explode if mishandled.
Problems may arise if there is
(1) a short circuit between the battery poles (by cutting the wires to a battery pack, crossing wires, etc)
(2) excessive heating
These situations can result in:
(1) generation of intense heat
(2) release of flammable gases (hydrogen) that can explode
(3) release of alkaline material that can cause chemical burns to eyes, airways and/or skin
These potential hazards are why alkaline batteries must be handled carefully when placed in luggage on airplanes.
