Description

Pigs are nasty creatures that can severely injury humans.

Risk factors for attack:

(1) wild pig

(2) uncastrated male pig

(3) turned away (pigs tend to attack from behind)

(4) being helpless on the ground

(5) being intoxicated

Types of injuries:

(1) biting

(2) goring with tusks (boars)

(3) crush injury against a fence, tree or building (some pigs are very heavy)

(4) being eaten

Bites from a pig often become infected. Bacteria may include Pasteurella multocida, Pseudomas species and Bacteroides species. These wounds should be treated with respect, with complete debridement, aggressive antibiotic therapy and close monitoring.

Tusk injuries may be deep, with deceptively small entry wounds. These should not be dismissed as minor injuries.

Pigs will start to eat anyone who is unfortunate enough to be helpless before them.
