Description

A high-pressure water jet is used to remove rust and debris from ships and other structures. It can cut through many things including unprotected human tissue.


 

The jet has a pressure of 6,000-7,000 pounds per square inch.

 

Risk factors for injury:

(1) lack of personal protective equipment (polyvinyl chloride suit)

(2) inexperience

(3) intoxication

(4) accident

 

Injuries may consistent of:

(1) lacerations

(2) transection

(3) penetrating injuries (if held in one place)

 

Injuries are common on the foot, lower extremities and hand.

 

Injuries can occur to:

(1) the eyes

(2) the face

(3) the neck and upper airway

(4) thorax and abdomen, including internal organs

 

Pain and other symptoms may be minimal so the severity of the injury may not be recognized immediately.
