Description

The Lambert-Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome (LEMS) is an autoimmune disorder affecting the presynaptic portion of the neuromuscular disorder. It usually is seen as a paraneoplastic syndrome. Apheresis may be indicated to remove the causative antibody if certain clinical conditions are present.


 

Indications for plasmapheresis:

(1) rapidly progressive (fulminant) disease, with respiratory compromise

(2) newly diagnosed patient who is unable to wait for immunosuppression to take effect

(3) failure for immunosuppression to control completely (resistant)

(4) unable to tolerate immunosuppression
