Description

Nuttall et al reported criteria for transfusion of red blood cell components. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota (the criteria appear to be those of the institutional transfusion committee).


 

Indications for transfusion of red blood cell components:

(1) hemoglobin < 8 g/dL in an otherwise healthy person

(2) hemoglobin < 11 g/dL in a patient with increased risk of ischemia

(3) acute blood loss with one or more of the following:

(3a) blood loss >= 15% of blood volume

(3b) diastolic blood pressure < 60 mm Hg

(3c) a decrease in systolic blood pressure > 30 mm Hg

(3d) tachycardia

(3e) oliguria

(4) symptomatic anemia with:

(4a) tachycardia

(4b) mental status changes

(4c) cardiac ischemia

(4d) dyspnea
