Coupland listed indications for when to consider a surgical revision of an amputation stump. The author is from the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Indications for stump revision:
(1) pediatric patient with continued bone growth
(2) fitting for a prosthesis
(3) traumatic neuroma
(4) painful scar
(5) sinus tract (may be sterile or infected)
(6) bone spike from residual periosteum
Indications specific for a below the amputation:
(1) fibula section too long
(2) tibia without anterior bevel
Additional indications:
(1) chronic skin ulceration at the stump resistant to conservative therapy
