Description

The NICE guideline for men with lower uinary tract symptoms (LUTS) list indications for use of an indwelling urinary catheter.

Patient selection: male with LUTS, especially with storage symptoms

Indications for a long-term indwelling urinary catheter:

(1) Medical management has failed AND surgery is not appropriate (or refused).

(2) Intermittent self-catheterisation is not an appropriate solution.

(3) Leakage of urine is causing a problem (contaminates a skin wound, pressure ulcer, etc.)

(4) The patient is distressed by the need to change clothing and/or bedding.

The patient needs to be informed about the risks of an indwelling urinary catheter, including:

(1) the possibility of recurrent urinary tract infections

(2) the catheter may not completely solve urinary incontinence
