Description

The European urologist organization (EAU) has issued guidelines for the evaluation and management of a patient with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Pressure flow studies should be conducted when certain clinical findings are present.

Indications for pressure flow studies prior to surgical treatment of BPH:

(1) voided volume < 150 mL

(2) maximum flow rate > 15 mL/s

Subgroups where pressure flow studies should be considered:

(1) men < 50 years of age, or > 80 years of age

(2) postvoid residual urine volume > 300 mL

(3) suspicion for neurogenic bladder dysfunction

(4) after radical pelvic surgery

(5) previous unsuccessful invasive treatment (I am not sure if this includes TURP)

NOTE: The wording of the guidelines is a little vague. It is unclear if the indications and subgroups are independent, or if both indications and subgroup membership is required. I have assumed that they are independent.
