Description

Focal Nodular Hyperplasia (FNH) is a benign hepatic lesion that often can be managed conservatively once the diagnosis has been established. Occasionally it may be necessary to surgically resect the lesion.

Indications for surgical resection of FNH:

(1) symptomatic (pain, etc)

(2) rapid increase in size or other abnormal behavior

(3) evidence of intra-lesional hemorrhage on imaging studies (especially with a risk for rupture)

(4) inability to clearly establish a diagnosis

The decision to operate may be easier if the lesion is peripheral and easily resected. The decision may be more difficult if there are technical difficulties involved.
