Description

Many patients with allergic rhinitis can be managed by a primary care provider, but sometimes the patient should be referred to a allergist.

Indications for referring a patient with allergic rhinitis:

(2) significant impairment in the patient's quality of life

(3) severe disease and/or complications

(4) failure to control despite optimal use of standard medications

(5) unacceptable side effects from medications needed to control the rhinitis

(6) need for immunotherapy

(7) presence of significant comorbid conditions that make management difficult

(8) evaluation of immunocompetence

(9) uncertainty about the diagnosis
