Description

There are times when it makes sense for a physician to prescribe a compounded medication.

Indications for a compounded medication:

(1) The patient needs a safe and effective medication that is no longer available from a pharmaceutical company (usually because of low demand or high cost of production).

(2) The patient has an allergy to a component in the formulation (binder, dye, stabilizer, preservative, etc).

(3) The patient needs a special dosage that is not available.

(4) The patient needs to take several medications and would show greater adherence if these were combined into fewer pills or tablets.

(5) The patient cannot take a formulation that is available and requires a reformulation (liquid, cream, powder, etc).

(6) Addition of flavors or other additives that would make the drug more palatable.
