Description

Pulmonary function tests (PFT) should be performed prior to anesthesia and surgery if certain conditions are present.


 

Patient factors:

(1) history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

(2) orthopnea

(3) dyspnea (shortness of breath)

(4) bronchospasm or asthma (to determine reversibility)

(5) history of major lung resection

(6) significant pleural disease

(7) a history of abnormal pulmonary function

 

Surgical factors:

(1) lung resection

(2) high risk for prolonged intubation or reintubation after surgery
