Description

Hypoglycemia can impair a diabetic driver and lead to accidents.


 

Risk for hypoglycemia while driving:

(1) low blood sugar before starting to drive

(2) taking a medicine that causes a fall in blood glucose, including having an insulin pump

(3) driving alone (with no one around to notice)

(4) history of frequent hypoglycemia or hypoglycemic unawareness

(5) not having a source of glucose readily available

(6) history of hypoglycemic-related mishaps

 

Factors that may contribute to impairment:

(1) concurrent illness

(2) concurrent medication that causes sedation or impairs cognitive function

(3) inclement weather

(4) vehicle malfunction

 

Consequences of impaired driving while hypoglycemic:

(1) having a collision

(2) being stopped by the police for reckless driving, speeding or other violation

(3) losing control of the vehicle

(4) automatic driving

(5) becoming disoriented

(6) needing to have someone else take over driving
