Description

A taste disorder may impact a person's diet and body weight. The body weight of a person with a taste disorder may decrease or increase depending on the severity and type of taste disorder.

A person with disordered taste may not be able to recognize spoiled food or toxic substances, which can result in sickness or even death.

Some patients lose interest in eating if they cannot taste their food, resulting in weight loss. Other patients may develop a preference for sweet or high caloric foods, resulting in weight gain.

Some healthier foods like fruits or vegetables may be avoided because they taste sour or bitter, which can result in dietary imbalance.

A patient with a taste disturbance may be at risk for social isolation since there may be less interest in eating with others.
