Description

Micek et al listed criteria for when a patient is immunosuppressed. These can help to identify a patient at risk for infection. The authors are from Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University in St. Louis.

Factors associated with immunosuppression:

(1) daily corticosteroid therapy >= 5 mg of prednisone or its equivalent

(2) infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

(3) solid organ or bone marrow transplant

(4) chemoradiation for underlying malignancy in past 6 months

(5) hereditary or acquired immunodeficiency disorder (hypogammaglobulinemia, combined variable immunodeficiency, etc)

where:

• For item 5, hereditary added.

• The immunodeficiency associated with HIV depends on the state of the infection.
