Description

Shabajee reported several patients who developed a chronic hypomagnesemia associated with omeprazole therapy. The authors are from Kent and Canterbury Hospital in England.

Clinical features:

(1) chronic therapy with the proton pump inhibitor omeprazole

(2) onset of chronic hypomagnesemia with associated features including hypocalcemia and hypokalemia

(3) usually the presence of other risk factors for hypomagnesemia

(4) reversal of the hypomagnesemia after discontinuation of the omeprazole therapy

The hypochlorhydria due to proton pump inhibitor therapy may reduce absorption of magnesium ion in the distal small bowel and colon.
