A patient with hereditary stomatocytosis is at increased risk for a hypercoagulable syndrome.
The precise cause for the hypercoagulability is uncertain but may be related to release of phospholipids from hemolyzed red blood cell membranes.
Risk factors for thromboemboli:
(1) status post splenectomy
(2) pregnancy or oral contraceptives in females
(3) history of thrombosis
Manifestations:
(1) portal vein thrombosis
(2) deep vein thrombosis
(3) pulmonary emboli
