Description

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can control radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis in most cases.

Patient selection: hemorrhagic cystitis following radiation therapy

It may be attractive for:

(1) a patient with other indications for hyperbaric oxygen therapy

(2) a patient who has failed other treatments

(3) a seriously ill patient since adverse effects are uncommon

Disadvantages:

(1) A hyperbaric oxygen facility may not be readily available.

(2) Some patients may experience claustrophobia.

(3) A serious event occurring during a treatment may be difficult to respond to quickly.

The performance depends on the population evaluated. In some studies it was used only in patients who had failed other treatments, indicating more severe disease.
