The Hydronephrosis Index (HI) can be used to monitor a hydronephrotic kidney.
Patient selection: hydronephrosis
Examination: ultrasonography
Parameters:
(1) total area of the kidney in square cm
(2) area of dilated pelvis in square cm
area of renal parenchyma =
= ((total area) - (dilated pelvis)) / (total area)
hydronephrosis index =
= (area of renal parenchyma) / (total area) * 100
Interpretation:
• The HI decreases as the Society for Fetal Urology Nephrosis grade increases.
