Description

An ice pick was a ubiquitous tool when blocks of ice were used in “ice boxes” to keep food cold. It became a favorite weapon of certain killers in organized crime.

Advantages of an ice pick:

(1) it is inexpensive

(2) it is legal to carry

(3) it is easily concealed

(4) it is terrifying

(5) it can leave a relatively small wound

(6) it can be used to torture the victim

Often a victim will have numerous stab wounds, especially if the attacker becomes frenzied.

An ice pick stab can be fatal if:

(1) it enters the brain through a temple

(2) it enters the brainstem at the back of the skull base

(3) it punctures the heart

(4) it makes a tear in a major artery

(5) it causes a pneumothorax

(6) it causes peritonitis

(7) it tears the liver and/or spleen

(8) there are enough of them (massive injury)
