Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA), Beta Cell Function and Insulin Resistance

Purpose: To use the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) to evaluate a patient's beta-cell function and insulin resistance.

Description

Matthews et al used the Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA) to predict the homeostatic concentrations of fasting insulin and glucose which arise from varying degrees of beta-cell deficiency and insulin resistance. The model is nonlinear but can be approximated by simple mathematical approximations.


 

insulin resistance =

= (fasting insulin in mU/L) * (fasting plasma glucose in mmol/L) / 22.5

 

beta-cell function in percent =

= 20 * (fasting insulin in mU/L) / ((fasting glucose in mmol/L) – 3.5)

 

The values can be read directly from Figure 1, page 413, in Matthews et al (1985).
