Description

Matthews et al used the Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA) to predict the homeostatic concentrations of fasting insulin and glucose which arise from varying degrees of beta-cell deficiency and insulin resistance. The model is nonlinear but can be approximated by simple mathematical approximations.


 

insulin resistance =

= (fasting insulin in mU/L) * (fasting plasma glucose in mmol/L) / 22.5

 

beta-cell function in percent =

= 20 * (fasting insulin in mU/L) / ((fasting glucose in mmol/L) – 3.5)
